Just in Time for Christmas 2024 our road has reopened to the public!
It’s by no means repaired but has been declared driveable for those unfamiliar with it. There are many places, such as in the image above, where its single lane and extra care is needed. The speed limit is 30kph and it’s best to stick close to that as oncoming traffic can take you by surprise!
From 6th January ‘25 repairs will restart so there will be delays and closures – these change regularly so be in touch before you travel for the latest update.
They’re telling us it’ll be another two years until it’s repaired – new weather events notwithstanding!
So take your time and enjoy the views…. And book a two day stay to make the most of your long trip out!
However there’s an alternative and quicker way to get to us! Leave your car in Picton and get a watertaxi over to Torea Bay and I’ll pick you up from there. This is a lovely trip on the boat and only takes 15 minutes, then 20 to Ngahere Hou. Actually this is the way our friends usually visit us once they’ve tried the road, and I would definitely recommend this option if you’re just staying one night with us and heading back to Picton the following day.
There are scheduled trips with Cougarline (03 573 7925) or Beachcomber Cruises (03 573 6175) or you can hire a private taxi (Picton Watertaxis) which can be more cost effective if there’s 3 or more people in your party. We recommend that you book ASAP especially over the summer.
